In ancient Hinduism, during child's early life, Guru used to teach them - Aham Brahmasmi, meaning I am Brahma.

In my experience also, we are not giving God anything. In uncovering who we are, we merge in with 'what is all.' There in no separate God. If the ego dies, that godliness automatically arises.
